Jacob Radcliff: 51st and 54th

Jacob Radcliff[e], Mayor 1810-1811 and 1815-1818: Radcliff (1763/4 –1844) is listed as an enslaver in the census.

In his household in Albany, there are two enslaved persons in 1790 and 1800. In 1810, there is one enslaved person in his house in New York City (Ward 3).[1] In the 1820 Census, Radcliff has one female under fourteen “free colored person” in his house in Poughkeepsie.[2]

In the Jury Ward Census:

  • 1816: Counselor, 88 Chamber Street: age 53, freeholder and personal estate of $150; freeholder of 100 pounds and upwards; 1 tenant renting $5 per annum; 4 male and 4 female white inhabitants; 1 male and 1 female “coloured inhabitants, not slaves;” ten total inhabitants[3]
