George A. Thompson, New York University, is the author of A Documentary History of The African Theatre . (Northwestern University Press, 1998) In the course of his research he extensively researched the lives of enslaved and free black people based on New York newspaper articles and advertisements.

He authorized their use in New York Slavery Records Index in 2018, and they were indexed in 2019, primarily by Marissa Moran, a Master of Public Administration graduate student at John Jay College of Criminal Justice.
