Advocates and Abolitionists

The following table lists people who generally advocated for the abolition of slavery, and people who acted as advocates for enslaved people, particularly fugitives, but also people who purchased enslaved person in order to manumit them.To see the entire record of the advocate, click on the last name of the advocate.

Some of the advocates identified here were also slave holders. In some cases this represented an evolution of views of slavery, such as slave owners who chartered the NY Manumission Society and then (promptly or gradually) manumitted their slaves, consistent with the mission of the organization they helped to found.

This is a dataset which is in the early stages of development.
